Allume System StuffIt and StuffIt Deluxe were one-time de-facto archiving and compression utilities on the Mac platform. Primary reasons are that hard drives were expensive and a basic copy of StuffIt was included with every Mac purchase. As those variables changed, ZIP and Disk Images began growing in popularity.
Because so many files were archived in the StuffIt format (.sit) or newer StuffIt X format (.sitx) and numerous links on the Internet may include such files, most computers at least have a copy of the free StuffIt Expander installed. DropStuff is a drag-and-drop version available as a demo download for creating quick archives. Versions are also available for Microsoft Windows platforms from the StuffIt website (www.stuffit.com).
