Pixelmater Pushes Pretty Pixels

Described as the first GPU-powered image editing tool, Pixelmater made a splash in July with an interface that is arguably as pretty as the graphics it is designed to edit. In case you don't know, GPU stands for graphics processing unit. This means application performance is reliant upon the memory (VRAM) and processing capability of the video card of your Macintosh while relying upon technologies like Core Image and OpenGL. In other words, 'it ain't for old Macs.' But on new hardware, Pixelmater is quite practical.

As an image editor, Pixelmater supports more than 100 different formats including TIFF and PDF. For its low price point, there are plenty of editing tools, more than 16 color correction tools, 50 Core Image-powered filters, layers, Photo Browser, and Mac OS specific feature support for ColorSync on Intel or Power Macs. Future inclusion of CMYK color space is anticipated.
